Hi,

I am planning to travel in Japan, starting in Osaka for 1 day, Hiroshima 1 day, Miyajima 1 day, Kyoto 2 days, and then Tokyo 2 days. Should I get a 7 day JR pass for this?

Thanks!

Hi there!

Let's have a look at normal ticket prices to see if savings are to be had with the JR Pass here.

Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,150
Hiroshima - Miyajima (return) ¥ 1,140
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 10,990
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,420

This adds up to ¥ 35,700, the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you would save at least ¥ 7400. The JR Pass also includes local travel on local JR Lines in Both Tokyo and Osaka as well as use your JR Pass to travel to and from the Airport, so Yes get one!

I hope this helps,
Daniel

Another loosely related question - I will have one day which the JR pass will not cover - I was wondering if it is worthwhile to get SUICA or ICOCA to get to or from the airports on the first/last day? And possibly also around the cities locally?

If I get a ICOCA card in Kansai, can I return it at Narita to get the deposit back?

Much appreciated!

Hi Again!

Yes buying an IC card like Suica or ICOCA is a good idea. You can use it to travel on most kinds of transport in Japan and they are very handy. For instance you can also pay with them in stores, kiosks and vending machines. You can return to card to any JR Station (including Kansai Airport) if you wish to get your 500Yen deposit back..although I would keep it as a cool souvenir!
