We will be travelling from Nozawa Onsen to Kyoto on 27 December. Is it possible to do this fully on a JR Pass or do we need a separate ticket from Kanazawa to Kyoto?

Hello Carolyn,
The answer is almost, like 99% :) Let me go into detail, you can use the JR Pass to travel from Iiyama station to Kyoto using the Shinkansen and ltd express train onwards to Kyoto. However, you do need to take the bus first from Nozawa to Iiyama station. This bus costs 600yen (About 5 bucks), and that's the only part not covered by the JR Pass.
