Dear Sir/Madam,

I am going to bring my girlfriend to go to the entire Kansai Region from KIX for 12 days because she wants to visit Osaka.

The following points will be visited from probably Ryokan near any JR station in Osaka (without any order at the moment except item 10):

A1 Lake Biwa
A2a Nara Deer Park (4 hours)
A2b Fushimi Inari Shrine (4 hours)
A3 Kyoto City
A4 Sagano Kameoka and Arashiyama (12 hours)
A5 Kinosaki Onsen
A6 Amanohashidate
A7a Wakayama Kishi Cat Station Leader (2 hours)
A7b Wakayama Kuroshio Fish Market (6 hours)
A8a Himeji Castle (5 hours)
A8b Kobe Harbourland (3 hours)
A8c Nozomi Shinkansen Joyride from Okayama to Shin-Osaka
A9 Universal Studios (12 hours)
A10 Osaka City (must put this in last)

Since Shinkansen, Limited Express, Kyoto Tango Railway, Wakayama Electric Railway are required for items 5 to 8, a Kansai Wide Area Pass is required for those. We leave Kansai by domestic KIX to HND.

Question:
I had gone to all of them except items 1, 5 and 6 with my mum before. However, I didnt know this forum during my first journey to Kansai Region. This time I go with my girlfriend. This time we go to another country via the flight to Japan (tourist better than just a transit) because of some private reasons. Therefore, we save as much as possible in food, living and transport.
Apart from one piece of Kansai Wide Area Pass per person, does Kansai Area Pass (1 to 4 days) or second piece of Kansai Wide Area Pass, which is enough to save to cover the remaining items? We can swap items if you see fit.

Regards,
Jet

Hi Jet,

Sorry for the late reply - I saw 1 answer on your post and thought we had replied already. I've updated your original list with your 2nd post, so it's easier to follow. Now without further waiting, let's have a look at your post in detail.

I looked at the value of a Kansai Area Pass or Wide Pass for the first couple of days, ultimately this depends on where you will stay and what station you will get on and off. Additionally, there is the question what station(s) you'll use for Lake Biwa. The lake is very large, though there is good JR access throughout. I'd explore Hikone myself as a stop :)

Brining it down to a simplified version, we'd look at the following travel:
Osaka - Hikone (Biwa) 3.960 yen
Osaka - Fushimi Inari Taisha (Kyoto) 1.720 yen
Osaka - Kyoto 1.140 yen
Osaka - Arashiyama - (Kyoto) 1.980 yen

For a total of 8800, a 4-day Kansai Area pass is 6,800 yen, so there are savings to be made here using that pass. Especially if you plan to do multiple stops around lake Biwa, and maybe some local travel in Osaka and Kyoto city as well. Since you'll be based in 1 place, it should be easy to even swap items on day of travel.

Note that the above prices are return ticket prices, using local trains in the Kansai Area.

I hope you find this useful,
Daniel
