Day 1 Haneda airport - Tokyo
Day 3 Tokyo – Hakone
Day 4 Hakone – Tokyo
Day 5 Tokyo – Nikko and Nikko – Tokyo (still to be decided)
Day 6 Tokyo – Myajima
Day 7 Myajima Kyoto
Day 9 Kyoto Nara and Nara – Kyoto
Day 12 Kyoto – Tokyo
Day 13 Tokyo – airport

This is the first time to Japan for my wife and myself and my question is whether it is cheaper to use the 14-days JR pass to cover the whole trip or the 7-days JR pass and activate it on day 6 (Tokyo-Myajima) to be covered until return to Tokyo (day 12), but having to pay for trips from Tokyo to Hakone and perhaps to Nikko and travel by subway or train in Tokyo and Kyoto.
Thank you for your help

Hi there,

You do plenty of travel, and both a 7-day and 14 day JR Pass would help you make good savings. Having said that, with some planning, the 7-day JR Pass + local tickets at the start would potentially cost less.

For example, travel to Hakone and Nikko can be done using different kinds of transports. With the JR Pass you can use the Shinkansen, which are the fastest (thus saving you time as well) but there are plenty of other options that cost less. Such as the Odakyu line to Hakone or Tobu-Nikko line, both take longer but are scenic rides.

In conclusion, get the 14-day JR Pass if you want the fastest and most convenient option and the 7-day JR Pass + normal tickets for the most cost efficient option and some fun and variety along the way.

Hope that helps :)
Daniel
