Hello,

I am wondering if I should buy either a 7 day JR pass or one for 14 days. I arrive in Fukuoka on the 1st of August. From there, I will travel with a friend of mine to Osaka, where he will take a flight to Tokyo on the 12th. However, I think I want to see the temples in Yamagata first before I go to Tokyo myself. However, I want to be in Tokyo on the 15th or 16th. What should I do and how should I do it? (secondly, is it worthwhile to go to Yamagata (Yama-dera)?)

Hi there,

First let me start with Yamadera, I have not been there yet myself. However Mari as heartily recommended a visit to Yamadera me in some of her posts. I think that it will be especially nice during summer. I would certainly recommend a aa 14 day JRPass for this, you can use it to travel all the way from Fukuoka up to Yamagata and back Tokyo without having to worry about ticket costs.

Also on the way to Tohoku, I would certainly suggest a visit to Matsushima too, which is very beautiful and one of the best places to visit in the area, close to Sendai (which is great too btw).

Have a great time in Japan!
-Daniel
