JR 21 day pass costs more than splitting up, so should I buy 7/14day passes or a combination of regional passes or buy individual tickets?

Hi, Sorry this maybe a long post but welcome any help! I'm looking to travel to Japan in February this year and have the following itinerary planned: Touchdown 22nd Feb Tokyo, depart for Kyoto 25th, Depart for Koyasan 29th, Depart for Nara 1st March, Depart for Osaka 2nd, Depart for Kii-Tanabe 3rd, Walk Kumano Kodo - stay in Nachi, Depart for Nagoya 8th, depart for Yamanouchi, Nagano 9th, Depart for Kamikochi 12th, Depart for Tokyo 14th.

If I activated my pass when I leave for Kyoto that would be 19 days - 21 pass (but costs more than individual tickets) so would a combination of 7 or 14 day and some individual tickets work out best?

many thanks,

Hi there,

A lot of your travel is within the Greater Kansai Area (like Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Koya-san, etc). Using local trains with Kansai is relatively low cost, so look at using a local pass here like the Kansai Area Pass, or just normal tickets.

Then use your Japan Rail Pass for the more expensive trips, to cities like Nagano and Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
