Hi,

I've just booked flights to Japan and a week JR pass which doesn't seem enough time!

Keen to see as much as possible, what would you recommend to see?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Good question! Japan has a lot to offer and many many great places to visit.

Since it is your first time I would recommend a visit to Kyoto and Hiroshima for sure!
When you are in Hiroshima a visit to Miyajima is a must see too!

If you would like to see some of the mountainous mainland of Japan, consider a visit to Takayama which is a lovely traditional town.

If you tell me some of your interests I can give you some more specific recommendations. Are you flying into Narita Airport (Tokyo)?

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel,

I'm traveling with my partner, we're both around 30yrs old and we're keen to see as much as possible of Japan and experience true Japanese culture. We fly into Narita Airport and was thinking of spilting our time out to stay in Tokyo and Koyto and do as many day trips as possible.

Would be great to hear of any other recommendations

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

That sounds like a good plan! The JR-Pass is about the same price as the return Tokyo Kyoto, so any day trips you do become free!

Day trips from Tokyo

Since it is your first trip in Japan, I would recommend a visit to Nikko for sure, it makes for a great day trip from Tokyo and you can go the whole way there by JR.

Alternatively Kamakura is a nice day trip to from Tokyo, one of the main attractions is the Daibutsu or Big Buddha.

Lastly a personal recommendation is Kawagoe this place is less frequented by foreign tourists but conveys a deep feeling of traditional Japan.

Day trips from Kyoto.

From Kyoto you have many options and it is hard for me to make a selection.

For culture and history I would definitely recommend a day visit to Nara. Some of the temples and structures are very impressive.

If you want a break from temples and want to see more of the modern city life visit Osaka! There really is a lot to do there. One thing I really would recommend is to simply walk to streets of Shinsaibashi to get a real feel for the city. See this website for more information about Osaka.

You could also go to Hiroshima as day trip, I think that the peace museum alone is worth the trip.

It may all be a little to much to fit in a week, so pick the ones you like best and enjoy Tokyo and Kyoto too!

Hope this helps,
Daniel
