Hello!

We're first-time (and very excited!) travelers to Japan. We've made a schedule and just hope it's doable with train schedules. Will it be worth it to purchase a Japan Rail pass for these locations and this timing or is it better to buy separate tickets? We were thinking about getting a 14 day pass. We would also like to know if the Japan Rail pass covers all of these locations and if we'll need to buy extra tickets outside of the JR pass. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Arigato gozaimasu! :D

Hi there!

Japan amazing, I am sure that you well be highly impressed when you can to Japan! Looking at your itinerary, it all looks doable. One thing to keep in mind though is that the railway system in Japan shuts down after midnight to resume the next morning around 6 a.m. This is important to keep in mind when taking trains in the evening. For instance: Tokyo - Kyoto takes about 160 minutes by train, this means that the last train will depart Kyoto around 21:20 to arrive at Tokyo around midnight.

Let's have a look at ticket prices to see if a JR Pass would be useful.

Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 10,380
Nagoya - Nagano ¥ 6,930
Nagano - Kyoto ¥ 10,330
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,550

For a total of ¥ 41,730 The 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100. So you are close but would not cover the price of the JR Pass yet. However the JR Pass would quickly pay off, for instance you can also use it for local travel around Tokyo/Osaka (such as to Disneyland or Universal Studio) and travel to or from the Airport. Just making a day trip to Hiroshima or Nikko alone would make the JR Pass more than pay for itself.

For the rest, it all looks good to me!
