Itinerary for 13 day trip-Osaka ITM-Kyoto-Yonago-Hiroshima-Tokyo-Narita

Two friends, and my wife and I will be arriving January 1, 2019 in Osaka-ITM to visit our daughter and do general sightseeing.

Day 1- From ITM, we will be immediately traveling to our hotel in Kyoto near the train station.
Day 2 and 3-sightseeing in Kyoto
Day 4-travel to Yonago, where our daughter lives and works.
Day7-travel to Hiroshima, staying at hotel by the train station
Day 8-travel to Tokyo. Hotel is in Shinjuku.
Day 9-13-2 of us may stay in Tokyo, with a possible side trip to Yokohama; the other two may take a day trip to Fuji-san, but otherwise stay in Tokyo.
Day 13-travel from hotline Shinjuku to Narita and home.

Does it make sense to get JR Passes and if so, should we get the 7 or 14 day passes? (If we get 7 day passes, may we extend them for an additional fee, or do we need to get new 7 day passes after day 7 of the original passes?) Will any of the trips not be covered by the JRPasses? What is the difference in service between "ordinary" and "green?"

Thank you in advance for your help.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Yes, a 7 day JR Pass will make sense when used from Day 4 to Day 10. These are the routes that cost the most and where a JR Pass would help you make savings. The JR Pass would cover all travel between the cities you visit, including Kyoto - Yonago and Hiroshima - Tokyo, which by far are the most costly.

From there you'd be fine buying normal tickets locally, as this won't cost as much as longer intercity travel in Japan.

Green Car is the equivalent to 1st class on railways in other countries. We have various posts in our blog going into the details of the Green Car and what to expect.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
