Hello - could you please help us with confirming travel details for our first trip to Japan (in Nov 2018):

Day 1 - Arrive narita 7pm. Collect JP pass if office still open (already purchased). shuttle Bus to accommodation in Narita.

Day 2 - Morning in narita, then:
Option 1: Shuttle Bus back to airport to collect JP pass if not open when arrive.
Accommodation is in Shinjuku so catch Nartia Express from airport to Shinjuku Station.

Option 2 - if were able to get pass on arrival - is it still best to go back to airport and do option 1?

Day 3 - sightseeing in Tokyo. Use JR Pass on Yamanote Line to visit Harajuku & Shibuya (Scramble Crossing) and other attractions like Imperial Palace. Thinking of riverboat cruise - any suggestions?

Day 4 - thinking of doing day trip to Mt Fuji. What is best way to travel using JR pass?

Day 5 - Train from Shinjuku to accommodation in Kyoto (Hotel Excellence Emmachi Ekimae). Nearest station is Emmachi. What is best way to travel using JR pass? Do we need to change trains and, if so, how many times?
Believe this accommodation is close to Sagino Bamboo Grove - do we use JR pass to get from Emmachi to Grove?

Day 6 - Day trip to Hiroshina. Visit peace park, dome and other attractions. What is best way to travel using JR pass?

Day 7 - Day trip to nara. Visit Nara Park, temple & Yoshiki-en Garden. What is best way to travel using JR pass?

Day 8 - travel from accommodation to Narita Airport to catch 8pm flight. What is best way to travel using JR pass and how many times do we need to change trains?

Any help on getting around and other tips would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

1.) It would depend where you are staying, you can also take the train from Narita city into Tokyo. Which works quite as well.

2.) You can walk easily from Harajuku to Shibuya and it is quite a nice walk via Omote-Sando, this is considered the 5th avenue of Tokyo. Out of Harajuku station go right and you'll get to the start of Omote-Sando. Enjoy the walk down the street and once you reach the end, go right. Walk for about 10 minutes and you're in Shibuya.

3.) For Fuji, please see: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/itinerary-tip-mt-fuji

4.) You can take a local train from Emmachi to Kyoto station, or continue on the same train to Saga-Arashiyama station to access the bamboo grove and the rest of Arashiyama.

6.) You can use the local sight seeing bus for free using the JR Pass, to access the peacepark and other parts of Hiroshima.

7.) Direct train from Kyoto station to Nara station.

8.) Depends where you are departing from :) The easiest way is to travel to Tokyo station first, then use the Narita Express from there to the airport.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you for your response, they were very helpful - I just have 2 further questions in relation to a couple of the answers you gave:

Point 4 - We will be travelling from Shinjuku to our accommodation in Kyoto and our hotel is very close to Emmachi station. Taking Hikari - do we change trains at Kyoto?
In your answer you also mentioned taking a local train between Kyoto & Emmachi - are local trains included in the JR pass?
If we wanted to check in and then go to the bamboo grove can we catch train from Emmachi station to Saga-Arashiyama? Is this the best way and is this included in JR pass?

Point 6 - For the day trip to Hiroshima, we will be leaving from and returning to Emmachi Station. What is the best way to get to Hiroshima & back using JR pass? Also, where do we get on the local sight seeing bus?

thank you again.

Yes, for Emmachi you would get off the Shinkansen at Kyoto station, then use a local train there. The JR Pass covers this. The same train continues to Saga-Arashiyama. Local JR trains are included in the JR Pass.

The route would be Emmachi -> Kyoto station -> Shin-Osaka -> Hiroshima station and same in reverse for the way back. I recommend going to the tourist information at Hiroshima, they can give you a free map with stops for the bus. You can also read more about it here: http://www.chugoku-jrbus.co.jp.e.aec.hp.transer.com/teikan/meipurupu/

Hope this helps (too)
Daniel
