Is the JR Pass worth it for my itinerary?

Hi there,

I will be in Japan for 9 days, 4 days Tokyo and I was planning on going to Kamikochi (Train to Matsumoto, bus to Kamikochi and then Takayama one night), from Takayama a train to Kyoto, 2 days there and then Mt Koya one night to go to Mt Fuji for a day and then back to Narita airport.
Because these destinations are smaller cities, would it still be worth it to purchase a 7 day pass?

Thanks

Ann

Hi Ann,

I made a little list of ticket prices to see if it would be worth it,

Tokyo -> Matsumoto ¥ 6,710
Takayama -> Kyoto ¥ 13,750
Kyoto --> Osaka (to access Koya) ¥ 540
Osaka --> Tokyo ¥ 13,220
Tokyo --> Narita Airport ¥ 2,940

This adds up to ¥ 37,160, the 7 Day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300, so you would save ¥ 8,860.
There are a couple of places to visit Fuji, most people visit the Fuji-five-lake area, which is best reached from Tokyo. Wikitravel has a great guide on how to visit Fuji.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
