Is the JR Pass worth buying for my Itinerary?

Hi,

Myself and my Wife are going to Japan on the 15th September for our Honeymoon. We are wondering if it is worth getting the JR pass.

We land in to Osaka on the 15th and are planning on staying in a hotel there for a few days before heading towards Tokyo.
We are thinking we will do a day trip to Hiroshima while in Osaka. Also maybe head to Koyasan and Kyoto while there.
Then as we head to Tokyo we were looking to visit the likes of Hakone and Takayama.

Can we use the JR pass to go to the following destinations?:
- Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Takayama - Tokyo - Hakone - Koyasan

Hi Conor,

Assuming you're flying out of Osaka, here is the cost breakdown for your trip:

  1. Kansai airport > Osaka: ¥2600, (53mins, 57km)
  2. Osaka > Hiroshima: ¥10150, (104mins, 345km)
  3. Hiroshima > Kyoto: ¥10990, (126mins, 380km)
  4. Kyoto > Takayama: ¥9980, (193mins, 314km)
  5. Takayama > Tokyo: ¥14600, (273mins, 532km)
  6. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3840, (35mins, 83km)
  7. Odawara > Osaka: ¥12470, (190mins, 472km)
  8. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3340, (57mins, 64km)

TOTAL: ¥67970 for 8 legs

  • 07 day rail pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥39670
  • 14 day rail pass (¥45,100) saving: ¥22870
  • 21 day rail pass (¥57,700) saving: ¥10270

As you can see you'll make good savings with a 14 day pass while you are in Japan, so I can certainly recommend this option.

Please note that for Koyasan you'll need to use the non-JR Nankai lines from Osaka, and for Hakone you should use the non-JR Odakyu lines from Odawara. For Hakone I recommend the Hakone Free Pass. All other locations in your itinerary will be accessible with a JR Pass.

That is great to know that the JR Pass can be used to get to destinations such as Kyoto and Takayama, pretty much to the majority of place we would like to go to.
