Hi! I have a question about whether the 7 day JR Pass is worth it for me and my family (there are 4 of us). Below is our city to city itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive into Haneda and then going to Kyoto
Day 1 - Day 4 will be in Kyoto
While in Kyoto we are planning to have a few day trips 1 Day trip to Studio Ghibli Park Day 4 - Train to Osaka
Day 4 - 6 will be in Osaka
1 Day trip to Nara Park Day 6 - Train to Tokyo
1 Day trip to DisneySea

A few additional questions:
1. How early can I activate the JR Pass? Will I be able to activate it on the day I arrive and be able to take the train to Kyoto that day?
2. Do I need to reserve seats prior to the train? If so, do I do it when I book my train each time?

Please let me know!

Hi there,

For your itinerary it is likely to be more cost-effective to purchase your tickets individually. However, the JR Pass will cover all of your itinerary and so it is still an option worth looking into if you feel that a pass is better suited for you. Alternatively, the Hokuriku Arch Pass would cover your itinerary at a cheaper price, but you'd be travelling via the Hokuriku Shinkansen/trains rather than the Tokaido Shinkansen, making the journey times between Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto longer.

You can activate the JR Pass as soon as you arrive in Japan at a JR Travel Desk located inside JR stations - if you activate it on the day you are able to make reservations for trains on the same day.

You'll need to make reservations for any trip you make - this can be done as soon as you activate the pass, and you can make all reservations in one go if you should choose to do so. You don't have to, but I'd recommend this as you eliminate the potential threat of there not being any available seats if you make the bookings in advance.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
