We will be traveling from Narita to Niigata September 21. Catching a ferry to Sado Island ( staying there for 3 nights) then back to Niigata for 2 nights, then train back to Tokyo to start a cruise September 26. Is it cheaper to buy tickets as we go?

Hi there,
For your itinerary it is likely to be more cost-effective to purchase your tickets individually. However, the JR Pass will cover all of your itinerary except for the ferry to Sado, and so it is still an option worth looking into if you feel that a pass is better suited for you.
Hope this helps!
