Hello Everyone,

I'm planning holiday in japan in June of this year. I still have some question/doubt about the use of the JR Pass.
I want to stay between 10 to 15 days in Japan and mostly do the golden route, with some trip during the day to some city.

To have a better idea is the schedule I plan to do

for 10 day with the 7 day JR pass:
10 plane to tokyo
9 arrived in tokyo
8 tokyo
7 tokyo-hakone-tokyo
6 Tokyo -kyoto
5 kyoto-nara-kyoto
4 Kyoto-hikone-kyoto
3 kyoto
2 kyoto-tokyo
1 plane from tokyo

for 15 day with the 14 day JR pass:

15 plane to tokyo
14 arrived tokyo
13 tokyo
12 tokyo-hakone-tokyo
11 tokyo - Kamakura - Tokyo
10 tokyo
9 tokyo -kyoto
8 kyoto
7 kyoto-nara-kyoto
6 kyoto-hikone-kyoto
5 kyoto
4 kyoto-hiroshima-kyoto
3 kyoto-osaka-kyoto
2 kyoto-tokyo
1 plane from tokyo

the question I have is that for both stay the jr pass will be 7 and 14 days but with some fare calculator I can see that it's not worthy so I'm a little bit of a lost about this. Because if I take the JR pass I'm planning to only use it that means even for the day in Tokyo (use the yamamoto line and then walk to the destination etc) and also in Kyoto.

But if I need also a suica card in general I have to take it in consideration.

One thinks that I see also is that for Hakone we can go to the odawara station but after that we need to buy/use the Hakone pass.
And if I only take a JR regional pass I need to take two or three because of the cutting in district.

I think i like with the JR pass is that I will not have to plan/schedule as much all activity/train. Because if I have to buy every ticket, I will prefer to do it before I leave to Japan, to not have a surprise once arrived.
In the meantime I also see that if I take a JR pass we have access to some discount in some hotel stay/touristic site but once again I don't know if the discount if worthy.

Can I have your advice/help on what best to do?
thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Yes, I checked with the Fare Calculator and it seems to come out to less than the price of the JR Pass. However, it's as you said, it provides added benefit of making planning and organising a trip a lot easier. It therefore comes down to what you'd rather prioritise, either minimising costs or making your trip to Japan more straightforward to organise.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

Thank you for your quick reply.

It very helpful thank,

Another question now is that if I go by buying every ticket do you know what the best site to buy them / and is it also possible to buy them before leaving.
Or is it only possible to buy them in Japan ?

Once again thank you for your help,
Best regards,
