Hello,

I am writing about which way would be better for two people travelling for 21 days in Japan on the following itinerary :

0 Narita to Tokyo (UENO) (25 March 2025)
1 Tokyo×
54 km 0h 56min 2 Kamakura× (27 March 2025)
0 km 0 h 3 Tokyo×
84 km 0h 33min 4 Odawara× then to Hakone (28 March 2025)
0 km 0 h 5 Tokyo×
117 km 1h 49min (30 March 2025) 6 Enzan×to Erinji Temple and from Erinji Temple to Kyoto (31 March 2025)
591 km 4h 14min 7 Kyoto× (31 March 2025)
813 km 5h 3min 8 Nagasaki - Nagasaki× (6 April 2025)
594 km 4h 2min 9 Okayama× (8 April 2025) for Naoshima Island
31 km 1h 2min 10 Bizentai× (10 April 2025)
215 km 2h 34min 11 Osaka× (13 April 2025)

To re-iterate : TWO GREEN CLASS TICKETS FOR EACH OF THE ABOVE JOURNEYS BOUGHT INDIDUALLY (HOW AND WHEN TO DO THAT?) RATHER THAN 21-DAY JR PASS (140,000 YEN) (25 march - 14 April)

ALSO ARE THERE SUPPLEMENTS TO PAY ONN CERTAIN TRAINS?

Many thanks.

Yours faithfully

Hi Akbar and Fabrice,

The Nationwide JR Pass covers your itinerary except for the full route to Hakone and Naoshima, offering a convenient way to travel throughout Japan without the need to purchase individual tickets for each train ride.

Please refer to our blog posts below:
* Hakone * Naoshima Island

If you choose to use individual train tickets, you will need to purchase them at a JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or a ticket machine before boarding.

With a Nationwide JR Pass, you can board local trains and reserve seats on bullet trains without paying additional fare, as long as your journey is covered by the pass.

If you would like to upgrade the bullet train, please read our blog post Booking a Nozomi train ticket with your Japan Rail Pass.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko

Thanks Marika for your reply.

For Hakone and Naoshima, the extra tickets would be best bought before we start heading that way or only when we arrive at the point where the JR pass stops working?

And how much extra is it to go from Kyoto to Nagasaki on Nozomi ?

And for the Nagasaki to Okayama ticket , is that totally covered by the JR Pass?

Cheers

Akbar Hamid

Hi Akbar,

I am more than happy to help!

Hakone: If you are taking the Odakyu Line from Odawara Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station, you can simply purchase individual tickets at Odawara Station. If you are considering using Hakone Free Pass, you can purchase it on their website in advance.

Naoshima Island: The JR Pass covers up to Uno station. Across from Uno station, there is a ferry terminal where ferries depart for Miyanoura port on Naoshima Island. You can purchase the tickets at Uno port before boarding.

From Kyoto Station to Nagasaki Station, there is no direct Nozomi Shinkansen so you will need to take:
1. the Nozomi Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Hakata Station
2. the Relay Kamome from Hakata Station to Takeo Onsen Station
3. the Kamome from Takeo Onsen Station to Nagasaki Station

For JR Pass (Green car) holders, tickets for Green cars, reserved seats in standard cars, and non-reserved seats in standard cars will be available for purchase.
The additional fare for the Nozomi Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Hakata Station is 5,390 JPY for a Non-Reserved Seat, 6,570 JPY for a Reserved Seat, and 12,640 JPY for Green Car with the JR Pass.

Also, the JR Pass covers from Nagasaki Station to Okayama Station.

Kind Regards,

Mariko
