Hello!
I’m going to Japan on the 30th of July and going back on 15th of August (it’s around 17 days). I already have the JRpass exchange order for 14 days and I would like to make a wise use of it. But since it’s my first trip, I have some questions. First of all, this is my itinerary:

30.07 Osaka (I arrive at the late evening)
31.07 Osaka
1.08 Osaka
2.08 Osaka – Horyji - Nara - Kyoto
3.08 Kyoto
4.08 Kyoto (maybe you could suggest some daytrip?)
5.08 Kyoto
6.08 ???
7.08 Gifu (daytrip to Hakone )
8.08 Gifu
9.08 Gifu
10.08 Tokyo
11.08 Tokyo
12.08 Tokyo (daytrip to Fuji)
13.08 Tokyo and ???
14.08 ??? and Narita
15.08 Narita (flight back at 11.55 a.m.)

My plan isn’t complete yet… Could you please advice me when it’s better to activate my JRpass? Is it possible to go to Nikko from Tokyo for one day? or what could you suggest to see between Tokyo and Narita?

Looking forward to your reply.
Have a nice day!

Hi there,

Nice plan you are making there, I think it makes for a good basis for the rest of your trip. I see you still have some question marks here and there, so I hope that I can help to figure them out.

To start with your visit to Nikko, it is no problem at all to do it as a day trip from Tokyo. Part to Nikko is traveled on the bullet train so you are there in no time at all.

As extra stop after Tokyo I would suggest dropping by [Yokohama] this does not add a lot of travel time but makes for a very good stop and has lots to offer, you can also take the Narita Express directly from Yokohama, making for smooth ride back to the Airport.

Here are some other options for you to consider:
On day 6.08 make a visit to Kobe. I have always felt that this city is overlooked by too many tourists, especially considering all the things it has to offer.

At the same time I wonder why you would stay 3 nights in Gifu , I don't think there is that much to do. Instead I would suggest going up north a little to either Kanazawa or Takayama.

Lastly if you are looking for a nice day trip from Kyoto consider visiting Hiroshima, I know it is quite a ride to get there but the peace museum is not to be missed.

I hope this helps,
Daniel
