Hi there!

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Your basic costs for your trip are (assuming arrival at Narita airport) :

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3140, (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10780, (126mins, 366km)
  3. Nagoya > Odawara: ¥8900, (71mins, 282km)
  4. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  5. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3140, (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥27410 for 5 legs

Assuming this is all the travel you do then I recommend you purchase individual tickets as needed as you won't reach the level required for a 7 (¥28,300) or 14 (¥45,100) day JR Pass to become economical.

(For Hakone, the JR Pass will get you to Odawara. From here you should use the Odakyu operated lines to get to Hakone area. I recommend the Hakone Free Pass for this.

In Tokyo you can get good use out of a JR Pass on JR lines (here's map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference) however you will also need to use the Metro to some locations which is not operated by JR. There are various discount metro tickets available for overseas visitors in addition to standard tickets.

Hope this helps!

Hey there,

Yes - Narita Airport is the main international airport of Tokyo (so I assumed that was where you're landing). If you arrive at Haneda airport, then the cost from the airport will be around ¥500 each way.

I don't think this would really affect the decision about a 14 day pass. You'll need to spend ¥17,690 more on JR travel in addition to your itinerary to make a 14 day pass worth it (could be made up in a return to Hiroshima or Takayama from Nagoya for example).

The Nationwide Japan Rail Pass (which is what you will need for the area you intend to cover) is only available for purchase outside of Japan. You can not purchase it in Japan.

aaaand last of all, the Nozomi from Tokyo to Nagoya is ¥10,980 one way.

Hope this helps!
