Hello, my family and myself are travelling to Japan next February, and wanted to find out if it is best to purchase a JR pass or just individual tickets, my itinerary is as follows:
3 days in Osaka, then going to Kyoto - what is the easiest way to travel to Kyoto with luggage ?
From Kyoto we will be getting the bullet train to Tokyo and will have luggage as well, we then fly out of Tokyo, should I just purchase the bullet train tickets individually ?

Hello,

Your best bet would be purchasing the Osaka-Tokyo Hokuriku Arch Pass, which can be found here: https://www.jrpass.com/regional-passes/osaka-tokyo-hokuriku-arch-pass#regional_pass_type

This is because your itinerary is solely composed of locations included in this pass, making it the best and cheapest option for you and your family.

As for travelling with luggage on the Shinkansen bullet trains, here's an excerpt from our blog, which can be found here: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/how-much-luggage-can-i-bring-on-the-shinkansen-and-japanese-trains

When boarding the Shinkansen, the following regulations apply:

You may bring up to two pieces of baggage on board free of charge. For each bag the total of the length, width and height must not exceed 250 centimetres, the length must not exceed two meters and the weight must be no more than 30 kilograms.

Luggage pieces less than 160 cm (sum of height x length x width) can be brought aboard without prior reservation. For luggage pieces between 160 cm – 250 centimetres, a prior reservation is required, which can be made for free. In case no reservation is made, then a 1.000yen fine will be charged, and your luggage may be moved by the train conductor.

Luggage over 250 centimetres (again the total sum of height, width, and length) may not be brought on the train, and will need alternative transportation.

Hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to ask any further questions, if you wish.
