Hi, my partner and I are travelling to Japan for 13 days this coming April-May over the Golden Week holidays. Help us decide whether the 14-day JR pass is worth it!

Here is a break down of our itinerary:

28 - 29 April 2024: Tokyo
30 April: Osaka
1 May: USJ
2 May: Kyoto
3 May: Kobe
4 May: Hiroshima & Miyajima
5 May: Back to Tokyo
6 May: Tateyama Alpine Route (doing the Ogizawa -> Toyama route)
7 May: Enoshima & Kamakura
8 - 9 May: Mt. Fuji (Kawaguchiko)
10 May: Hakone
11 May: Tokyo -> Narita Airport

Help us decide is it more cost-effective and convenient to purchase the 14-day JR pass or would individual Shinkansen/train rides + day passes in different cities be better? We are also looking for something fuss-free if we can top-up a bit more for that.

Hi there,

For your itinerary it is likely to be more cost-effective to purchase your tickets individually. However, the JR Pass will cover most of your itinerary and so it is still an option worth looking into if you feel that a pass is better suited for you - it is more 'fuss-free' than purchasing individual tickets so it's definitely worth considering.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
