Hello! 👋🏼 I would like you to help me decide which JR Pass to buy.
Our trip is 15 days (January 20 to February 5) not counting the first and last day since they are flight days.

Japan Itinerary

•Day 1 January 20 Arrival in Osaka (Itami Airport)

•Day 2 January 21 Osaka Exploration

•Day 3 January 22 Universal Studios Japan

•Day 4 January 23 Osaka Exploration

•Day 5 January 24 Hiroshima - Miyajima - Kyoto

•Day 6 January 25 Kyoto Exploration (Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizudera, etc)

•Day 7 January 26 Kinosaki Onsen Day Trip

•Day 8 January 27 Kyoto Exploration (Arashiyama, Kinkakuyi Temple, etc)

•Day 9 January 28 Nara Day Trip

•Day 10 January 29 Kyoto Exploration (Ginkakuji, Philosopher's Walk, Nishiki Market, Pantocho)

•Day 11 January 30 Kyoto - Tokyo (Explore Roppongi, Asakusa, Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku)

•Day 12 January 31 Kawaguchiko Day Trip

•Day 13 February 01 Tokyo exploration

•Day 14 February 02 Kamakura - Yokohama Day Trip and return to Tokyo.

•Day 15 February 03 Tokyo exploration

•Day 16 February 04 Tokyo - Osaka (explore Osaka a little more and rest)

•Day 17 February 05 Osaka - Itami Airport

With the JR Pass calculator, it turns out that all transfers would cost me 70,000 yen, so the 7-day pass is worth it, but for 10,000 yen more I could buy the 14-day pass. I need help, should I buy the 14-day one? Or should I buy the 7-day one; if so, on what day do I activate it? I really appreciate your help and opinions please, I'm already a little stressed about this issue hahaha, if you have suggestions for changes to the itinerary they are very welcome.

Thank you very much 🙌🏼

Hi there,

A 14-day pass would likely be your best option, to be activated for when you leave for Hiroshima. My suggestion would be to activate the pass as soon as you land in Japan and set the activation date for the 24th - that way, you can begin making reservations for all of your train tickets a few days in advance improving the likelihood that you’ll find seats on the particular train services that you want. If you are stressed you can always look into our meet and greet services to help you activate the pass and make reservations.

Please note that to travel to kawaguchiko you will need to purchase an additional bus ticket from Kanazawa/Takayama (would recommend Kanazawa). This is relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of the JR Pass.

Kind regards,

Alexis
