Coming to Japan in two days and I can't work out the trains!
Routes we are doing:
Is there a direct train from Osaka to Fuji? We are staying near Kawaguchiko Station and Hyperdia says it'll take 5 hours and 4 different trains to get there??
Are there no return tickets? And can you buy tickets online?

The route in Hyperdia is correct and quite long to Kawaguchiko. It involved multiple transfers and takes about 5 hours.
Alternatively you can use the Shinkansen to Mishima station, then express bus from there to Kawaguchiko. However, note that the bus is not covered by the JR Pass.
Tickets can be purchased along the route, as you travel.
