Greetings,

We are traveling to Japan next week and evaluating which rail ticket methods may work best for us.

We plan to spend around 15 days in Japan ... arriving Sunday, April 2nd at ITM and leaving Sunday, April 16th from NRT.

Our rough itinerary is as follows:

  • Day 1 - Arrive at ITM, travel to hotel near Namba station Osaka
  • Day 2,3 - Local trains around Osaka
  • Day 4 - Travel to Kyoto
  • Day 5,6,7,8 - Local trains around Kyoto
  • Day 9 - Travel to Tokyo
  • Day 10 - Local trains around Tokyo
  • Day 11 - Day trip to Chureito Pagoda / Lake Kawaguchi / Mt. Fuji (understand busses may be involved)
  • Day 12,13,14 - Local trains around Toyko
  • Day 15 - Travel to Narita in the afternoon

Any insight if JR Pass would be worthwhile to purchase vs buying tickets individually would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

For this route: Buying normal tickets will be the best option, as there is not enough travel for a JR Pass to help you make savings.

You can use our JR Fare calculator, to get an idea of costs involved.

Kind regards,
Daniel
