Classic question on Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Tokyo

Hello all,
I've just purchased my JR pass for my trip in november.
The planning is :
1 november : arrival at Narita
From 1st to 6th : stay in Tokyo
6th ; trip from Tokyo to Kyoto (activation of JR Pass)
from 6th to 11th : stay at a ryokan in Kyoto near Kyoto JR station, so I would like to plan some day trip from Kyoto (I think for now Nara and Osaka).
11th : Kyoto-Osaka
11th-12th : Osaka-Narita by night train (and 7th day of JR Pass)

Can you give me some advices on day trips from Kyoto to Nara ? I'm hesitating between Kobe and Nara...

For the night train, could you confirm that JR pass is working for it ? is there a special booking to be made for these types of train ?

And last, are there lockers in Osaka station to leave my luggage on November 11th (between my arrival in Osaka and the departure of the night train) ? What are their cost ?

Thanks for your services on this site

Hi there!

Nara vs Kobe is indeed a classic. I was lucky enough to visit both earlier this year and both are great places to visit. It basically comes down to your own preferences.

Nara is a traditional town, known for its beautiful temples, historic museums and the deer that freely roam the city parks. It's main attraction is the Todai temple, which houses the Big Buddha.

Kobe is a modern city, which offers many different attractions, such as the local Sake breweries, China Town, Mount Rokka and the modern waterfront. There's a lot to do, so I would recommend giving this website a read.

As for the night train, the Sunrise Express bookable with the JR Pass and a basic seat is free of charge. This train is very popular so you would have to reserve it in advance. You can do so the moment that you arrive in Japan and activate your JR Pass.

As for Lockers, you can find them in every train station in Japan, prices start at 300yen/24H for a small one and go up to 800yen for a full suitcase.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
