We would like to travel from Tokyo(3 days) to Hakone to Takayama for a peiod of 2days so we can view the Sanno Festival. Then travel to Nagoya to Kumamoto 3days. Then to Nagasaki 2 days. Then to Hakata and Kyoto 2days. Then finally to Osaka and depart from Kansai airport for Korea. Is this possible? Or is it too much of traveling within the period of time we have? Should we purchase a 14 day pass?

Appreciate your reply and thank you for your support and assistance.

Cheers

Hi Chinty,

It looks possible I think. The trip rom Takayama to Kumamoto will need a day reserved I think, but aside from that all the other trips are fairly normal. You could possibly fit the big travel into 7 days, but I recommend spreading it out over 14 to really take things in and maintain flexibility for your trip (eg, if you wanted to stop in Hiroshima/Miyajima on the way up to Kyoto).

Here is a cost breakdown for you:

  1. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3,840 (35mins, 83km)
  2. Odawara > Takayama: ¥12,110 (240mins, 448km)
  3. Takayama > Nagoya: ¥5,670 (145mins, 166km)
  4. Nagoya > Kumamoto: ¥21,870 (272mins, 927km)
  5. Kumamoto > Nagasaki(nagasaki): ¥7,370 (124mins, 212km)
  6. Nagasaki(nagasaki) > Hakata: ¥4,380 (112mins, 153km)
  7. Hakata > Kyoto: ¥15,410 (196mins, 661km)
  8. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  9. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3,340 (57mins, 64km)

JR ticket cost: ¥74,530 for 9 legs

Note that for Hakone the JR Pass will get you as far as Odawara. From here you should aim to use the Hakone Free Pass to travel upto Hakone itself.

As you can see you'll make good savings with a 14 day pass so I can certainly recommend this option for you.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Mari for your prompt response to my query. Very much appreciate the advice given . However my wife wants to do a cruise from Kobe for 14 days and hence we have to change our itinerary. Can you help?

Our cruise starts and finishes in Kobe and we are keen to use either Kobe or Osaka for a 3night stay and using JR do Kyoto for one day, then Hiroshima for another day before departing for Nagoya. Is Mt Fuji closer to Nagoya or to Hakone? Can we do this by train? Then from here to Tokyo for 3 nights/4days. Perhaps we can use the JR in Tokyo for a trip elsewhere. Can you recommend any places for us to visit using JR Pass? Finally we will use JR pass for our trip to the airport.

Can you help??

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding
