Can't wait for our trip

We have 15 days from arrival to departure, March-April 2025. Arriving NRT, first stop Strings IHG in Shinagawa. Then Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, that back to NRT. Only need travel from Hakone to Kyoto, getting there we are doing on a tour.
Since we are 14 days plus one day, I thought that buying ticket from Narita to hotel separately, then 14 day green ticket looks most economical. Does the JR pass cover all our cities, looks to me as if is does, and is that the most economical way to arrange trip? I also looked at Kansai-Hiroshima regional pass, but that does not cover Hiroshima-NRT or Hakone-Kyoto.

Hi there,

The JR Pass will cover most of your itinerary except for any direct travel to Hakone - it will cover most of the journey between Hakone to Tokyo (the Shinkansen portion) however you’ll need to purchase a separate but relatively inexpensive ticket from Hakone to Odawara and then take an eligible westbound Shinkansen service directly to Kyoto station. This is likely your most cost-effective option.

Kind regards,

Alexis

Thanks, I figured that and we have Tokyo-Hakone covered. Will the JR pass cover our local transportation, busses, subways in the major cities we are visiting?
It looks like different companies have different routes.
Thanks!

Hi there,

The JR Pass will offer basic public transport in some major cities e.g. it will cover the main metro line in Tokyo, the JR Yamanote line or the Loop line in Osaka, as well as some buses, but if you plan to utilise the full public transit network in the cities you visit I'd suggest getting a Suica Card (or equivalent) as you can choose how much money you put into it and the leftover credit can be spent in coffee shops, small shops or the airport so nothing goes to waste. It's definitely worth picking one up if you wrere to ask for my opinion.

Kind regards,

Alexis
