putting together a last minute trip and trying to figure out the appropriate train pass

Dec 28 - arrive Narita
Dec 29-Jan 2 - Tokyo (the only day trip being considered would be a ski venture for the day but up in the air)
Jan 2 depart for Osaka
Jan 5 Osaka to Kyoto
Jan 8 Kyoto to Tokyo
Jan 9 Depart from Narita

Based on the forum, a 7 day pass seems obvious and maybe activate it on Jan 2. I was just wondering if we opt for a day trip out of tokyo, would it make sense to up it to 14? If we have 14 then our Narita transfer is covered but I dont think that is too expensive.

thanks for the feedback

Hi there!

Right now I would opt for the 7 day JR Pass. Depending on how much additional travel you plan to do a 14 day JR Pass may become worth considering. The difference in price between the 7 day and 14 day JR Pass is 16,800 yen. Thus it would become worth upgrading if you do at least this amount of travel.

If you do go for a 14 day JR Pass, then your travel to and from Narita Airport would also be covered, this alone is ¥ 5,480 for a return using the Narita Express.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Thanks for reply.

Just wanted to clarify though - if I buy the 7 day pass and I decide to make an additional trip, I would just have to buy the ticket separately? No way to switch the pass to 14 and pay the difference?

That's correct - unfortunately you can't change the duration of your JR Pass once you've purchased one. So choose wisely :)

Let me know if you do go for the 14day pass, I can give you some tips to make the most of your pass!

I think I will opt for the 7 day pass. If I make a day trip to the ski hill, I'd lose but it's too up in the air and I have to order today to secure delivery by the end of week!

thanks for all of the advice.
