Hello, I will be traveling with 3 of my buddies to Japan this December - January. Here is our itinerary below: Our plan was to purchase a 14 day pass and activate it on the 4th day. What are your thoughts? The 2nd week of our trip is very flexible, any suggestions of where to go and what to see North of Tokyo or around the area? Also any good recommendations for restaurants would be great as well.

Moreover is there anything we should know as we travel around? I know the rail pass isn't taken everywhere, which places on our itinerary would we need another pass/pre paid travel card. Finally, where can we purchase a travel card?

I apologize for all the questions, just want to make the trip go as smoothly as possible. Thanks!

Hi there!

That's a very interesting itinerary with many great places included! However the thing I am worried about is day 11-13. Do you plan to visit Hokkaido on Jan 3rd and Shirakawa (go?) in addition to Jigokudani on Jan 4-5th? I don't know if this is even possible, travel from Hokkaido - Tokyo can take up to 10 hours and it's an other long trip to Jigokudani. If you wish to Ski, why not visit one of the Ski reports around Nagano instead? One great option is Gala Yuzawa, an other is Hakuba. A really great source for winter sport information is Snow Japan.

Most places are included by the JR Pass, Shirakawago and Jigokudani do require extra transport by bus. The JR Pass is also great for exploring the north of Tokyo, of course Nikko is amazing other options to consider with the JR Pass include a visit to Sendai and maybe Ibaraki-ken.

Let me know what you think!
Daniel
