14 days - to get the pass or not to get the pass?

Hello,

I am travelling to Japan in the coming months and this is my suggested itinerary for 17 days:
- Tokyo - Mt Fuji - Osaka - Nara - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Nagasaki - Tokyo

  1. Are these places all included in the Pass? And how much would it cost if I booked the tickets individually?
If I get the 14 day pass, a few days I would not be covered, but I have seen the cost from Tokyo airport to the city centre is quite high, correct? So it would be better to activate it as soon as I land, right?

  2. Do you need to book train tickets in advance even if you have the pass? If so, how much in advance? I would like to have some flexibility when I am there to spend more/less time in each place. Will that be possible?

  3. Are there busses available to cover these routes too or just trains?

  4. What are regional passes? Are they different to JR Pass? If so, in which way?

  5. Are there any must-knows about JR Pass, please?

Thank you in advance

Hi there,

I would recommend purchasing your tickets individually, as it'll save you money and because your trip is 17 days long. If you strongly feel a pass is right for you, a 14-day JR Pass would still cover all of your itinerary. If you purchase the pass, you'll need to reserve seats for the carriages that require you to do so for, but there is flexibility about that as you can choose what trains you want to board on what days/times.

There isn't a huge national network of buses, they are mostly used locally and to get to places where trains can't, such as mountains. If you want to get around the country you'll need to do so by train.

Regional passes usually offer access to the same trains as the JR Pass, but are only valid for certain regions. Often they may include some private railways that aren't usually included in the JR Pass. I think that's everything that can help you!

Kind regards,

Alexis
