Hi all,

Travelling to japan next month for two weeks and was planning on buying a 14 day rail pass and just paying for local tickets around Tokyo as necessary. Itinerary is as follows:

First four days we spend in Tokyo - planning on day trips to Kyoto and Fuji and ofcourse travelling in and around Tokyo.
Remaining days - travelling to Hakuba and back.

Is the 14 day rail pass worth it for this trip or is there cheaper alternatives?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

For your itinerary the 14-day Pass is probably the best option. All your major travel already covers more than the actual pass cost and so any additional travel you may do becomes free as well.

Ticket prices:
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,020
Kyoto - Tokyo¥ 13,020
Tokyo - Hakuba ¥ 11,500
Hakuba - Tokyo ¥ 11,500

Total of ¥ 49,040 the pass costs ¥ 45,100 saving you at least ¥3,940. You can also use to pass to travel to and from the airport and also on local JR-Lines in Tokyo.

For fuji you can use the JR-Pass to travel by Shinkansen to Odawara and travel from there by private railway to your destination area.

Hope this helps!
