I will be arriving in Japan on May 17. I have purchased a 21-day JR Pass, and would like to take the Sunrise Izumo on May 31.
I read that I have to make a reservation for the Sunrise Izumo.
My question is once I activate my JR Pass on May 17, can I also reserve a seat for the Sunrise Izumo? Is that enough time, or will it be sold out?

This is quite a nice time window and I think that you'll be able to get seats in time if you activate the JR Pass around the 17th and serve seats at the same time.
