Travelling to Japan

Hi guys,

I'm travelling to Japan from 27th dec to 5th Jan. My rough itinerary is like this.

27th December - 29th December
Tokyo. Hotel in Fuchu.

29th December-31st December
Osaka. Day 1 kyoto and back to osaka for lodging. Day 2 USJ.

31st december - 5th Jan
Tokyo. Fuchu Hotel.

I'm getting the 7 day JR Pass. Is that sufficient and does it save me travelling cost?

Secondly, because me and my friend are going together, I'm planning to get 2 sim cards. 1 with data only and 1 with data with voice calls as my father is there but he does not know how to use internet. Is there any provider you can link me to that provides voice call? I've search around but it seems that all carriers are only providing data only sims.

Lastly, is there any fun place that you can recommend? Especially during this period. We're going to asakusa on new year eves to join in the commotion and some plans here and there like akihabara, Shinjuku.

Thanks for your help guys!

Hi there,

Buying a JR Pass is certainly recommended for your trip. A 7 day JR Pass is almost the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen. So any additional travel is basically what you would save.

As for buying a Japanese Phone Number, this is really hard without a long term visa. This is how I did it:

Though it means investing around 12,000yen at least.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Ouch. That's pretty pricey. Is there any way to book the shinkansen through the net?

Hi again!

I am afraid not, seat reservations can be made only in person in Japan.

(Unless you speak Japanese and have a Japanese credit card).

A cheaper option may be to look at a voip number and run that trough your data sim.

Hmm,

Which route and train should I be taking to incur the least amount of cost to travel to Osaka? I'm pretty confused with all the shinkansen lines.

There is only one Shinkansen line to Osaka, this is the Tokaido Shinkansen.

Look for that route and you can't get lost.
