The JR Pass is a great option for this itinerary. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Now you can cover all other JR travel for the same price. Such as travel between Tokyo and Narita Airport. In addition the JR Pass can be used for travel on local JR lines in Tokyo and to a limited extent in Kyoto, adding even more savings.

You may also have to buy subway tickets depending on what you wish to see and do. Shinjuku is one of the major stations in Tokyo and the greater part of the city can be reached with the JR Pass.

I'm trying to understand about seat reservations, are you able to help with this also?
We plan to arrive into Narita, exchange to get our 7 day pass then get train to Kyoto. If we want to reserve seats can we do this at the place we get our pass?
Also, does the pass cover the seat reservations or do we have to pay extra?

Have a look at our how to make seat reservations blog post. You may make seat reservations at the same time when you activate the JR Pass or later at any JR station.

All seat reservations are complementary.
