Hello Paul lee,
If you want to travel to Sapporo by rail, then I advise using a 7 day JR Pass for that route, you can make very good savings and the JR Pass will cover all your travels.
At the same time, you may also want to look into domestic flights, because it takes a full day of travel to get from Osaka to Sapporo.
