Hello! My family (4 adults) are planning on a two-week trip to Japan in March, 2016. We're planning to fly to Narita on March 19, spend 4 nights there and then go to Hakone (3 nights), then Kyoto (4 nights) then Osaka (3 nights) and go back to Manila from Osaka.

We are planning to take the Romance Car in the Odakyu Railways from Tokyo to Odawara and buy the Hakone Free Pass at Odawara Station.

I need advice on:
1. Whether it is better to take the Odakyu Train from Tokyo to Odawara and just get the JR Pass from Odawara to Kyoto to Osaka, or, take JR Pass all the way? Which is more economical?

2.Can we use the JR Pass for subways? If yes, in which city?

  1. Are no-smoking coaches available in the Romance Car and all JR trains? Do we need to make reservations and are they free?

Thank you,
Perks

Hello Perks,

If you travel one way to Osaka, then I recommend simply buying normal tickets. A JR Pass can help you make savings if you make a return between Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka.

Using a local train, JR or Odakyu from Tokyo to Hakaone. The romance car is a special train with more comfortable and relaxed. The view is also amazing.

The JR Pass is not valid on any metro/subway system, though urban trains in Tokyo and Osaka run by JR are covered.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your quick reply Daniel. Can I ask a few more questions:

  1. Can we buy one-way bullet train tickets on the day itself or should we make reservations ahead of time?
  2. Can you recommend any place where we can watch Sumo wrestling and Kabuki in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Perks,

1.) You can reserve bullet train tickets on the day of departure. Unless it is a public holiday, then I would recommend getting them a couple of days in advance.

2.) For all things Sumo see: http://www.sumo.or.jp/en/ you can also visit the Sumo stadium and museum. For Kabuki, head to Kyoto this website has all the details.

Enjoy Japan!
Daniel
