Hi

We will be in Tokyo for 4 nights and then travel to Mt. Fuji for 1 night and thereafter travel to Kyoto for 3 nights.

  1. Can you advice on the trains and buses to take for the above routes.

  2. Is it customary to tip for services in Japan? Example: can I tip the free walking tour guides?

Thanks

Hi there,

1.) It really depends on where around Fuji you wish to travel. Popular places include Fuji five lakes, of which the 1st is Kawaguchiko, Hakone or Gotemba. Please let me know where you wish to visit and I can give you the best route/transportation.

2.) Generally people may find it strange if you tip them. Of course you could offer your guide a free cup of coffee or so, or even better a small present from your country, sweets work great!

Hope this helps!

Hi Lillian,

The if you have the JR Pass, take the Fujikyu line from Kawaguchiko - Otsuki and a local train from there to Tokyo station. At Tokyo you can transfer to the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

WIthout the JR Pass, take an express bus from Kawaguchiko to Mishima station, from there use the Shinkansen to Kyoto station.

Hope this helps :)
