Hi, I'm going to Japan again this May with my husband and my toddler. We're planning to go to Tokyo, Mt. Fuji area (Fuji Q Highland, the five lakes etc) and Takayama for their Hida beef.

So far this is what we have in mind:
day 1 arriving in Narita
day 2 daytrip to Mt Fuji area and return to Tokto in the evening
day 3 Tokyo
day 4 daytrip to Takayama for lunch and return to Tokyo
remaining 5 days in Tokyo.

Is it recommended to just do daytrips to Mt Fuji and Takayama? Or what would be your suggestion about this? And do I need JR Pass to cover all these trips?

Than k you sooo much!

Hi there,

Great to hear that you're coming back to Japan!

Fuji works well as a day trip from Tokyo and is easily be done for Tokyo. For details, please see our write-up here: https://www.jrpass.com/blog/itinerary-tip-mt-fuji

Takayama is a bit of a different story, it is possible to do as day trip but it takes about 5 hours to get there by train. Say you'd depart Tokyo by 7 am, you'd arrive around 12. Have 3-5 hours to do lunch and explore and then another 5 hours back to Tokyo to arrive there by 10 pm. My advice would be to stay at least 1 night in Takayama to have a more relax journey and get a better feel for the local atmosphere. Most tourists leave Takayama after 5pm and the local atmosphere becomes a lot more tranquil. Besides, it is also a good excuse to try a local Japanese Ryokan.

A JR Pass is recommended if you make the trip to Takayama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
