Tokyo- Osaka- Kyoto

Dear Sir

I need some advices

We are from UK. We are flying to Osaka on 1st May 2016 arriving at around 4.30 pm. We will go to Tokyo immediately (we had to change our plan because we thought we were meeting friends in Osaka first ). We will stay in Tokyo till 8th May when we will go to Kyoto until 12th May. We will fly to HK at 9.20 am on 12th May 2016.

Can you advise if we should buy a 14 day rail pass ?

Where can we go for day visits when we use Tokyo and Kyoto as our bases using the train ? Or where would you recommend ?

Would it be possible to catch a early train from Kyoto to Osaka Airport on 12th May bearing in mind the plane takes off at 9.20 am ? Cam we use the JR Pass the that journey ?

Hi Steve,

While a 7 day JR Pass would have been perfect for this route, a bit more travel would be required for a 14 day JR Pass to help you make savings. For now my recommendation would be to stick with normal train tickets while travelling in Japan. Alternatively you could consider adding a tad more travel, like a day trip to Hiroshima and use a 14 day JR Pass.

Travel from Kyoto - Kansai Airport takes 1.5H at the minimum. Trains start service around 6 am, so there would not be a lot of time to do it. It may be better to stay the last night in Osaka or even close to Kansai Airport.

For day trips from Kyoto, consider visiting, Nara, Koya-san, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji or even Hiroshima.

For Tokyo, Nikko, Yokohama and Kamakura are some of the best day trips outside of the metropolis.
