Forgive me as we are first timers to Japan and this website. I realize this may already have been answered but we would like to travel from Tokyo to Takayama stopping at Matsumoto for a brief visit en route. We then plan to spend two days in Takayama before heading to Kyoto for several days. Would someone be kind enough to let me know the best way to proceed (or if this is even possible on JP). Thank you.
Tokyo - Matsumoto - Takayama - Kyoto
Hi there!
Not a problem at all.
Tokyo to Takayama stopping at Matsumoto for a brief visit en route. We then plan to spend two days in Takayama before heading to Kyoto for several days. Would someone be kind enough to let me know the best way to proceed (or if this is even possible on JP).
Yes - this trip is very possible on the Japan rail pass. Here are the costs of the trip if you were to buy individual tickets, assuming you'll be returning to Tokyo:
- Tokyo > Matsumoto: ¥6710, (170mins, 235km)
- Matsumoto > Takayama: ¥11310, (304mins, 354km)
- Takayama > Kyoto: ¥9680, (191mins, 314km)
- Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13220, (161mins, 513km)
TOTAL: ¥40920 for 4 legs
If your plans fit this itinerary I would certainly recommend a 7 day rail pass (¥28,300) over buying individual tickets.
You can look up train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.
Hope this helps!
