Dear sir/madam,
We're travelling with our JR Pass trough Japan. Now we really want to visit the Takachiho gorge and the vulcanic crater of Mt.Aso.
Could someone please help us out finding the easiest/cheapest way getting there.

Here's a great guide to Aso - previously posted by Mari. It has all the information for accessing the crater.
Do note that Aso has been closed off for for a 1km radius from the crater, due to hazardous gas. The latest information can be found here.
As for Takachiho. The best way getting there is to use a bus from Kumamoto station. An alternative is to rent a car as there's no rail connection.
