My partner and I are travelling in late February from Kanazawa to Tokyo and wish to do so on the Shinkansen. As we are only catching the one train, am I right in thinking there is no point in obtaining a JR pass. Also, on which website site can I book the train in advance? Thanks for your help.

You are right, for a one way trip it is better to purchase the ticket itself.
It is not possible to book the train online in advance. You can do so in Japan at any JR counter or travel center.
