Rail Pass for Tokyo Travel

We are travelling to Japan, in April and staying four nights in Tokyo, then travelling to Hiroshima for two nights, up to Kyoto for four nights, then back to Tokyo for the last two nights, so we are definitely getting a rail pass. However, we are unsure whether to go for the 7 or 14 day pass, so have two queries regarding this.

1: If we were to validate, and use the pass at 10am, for example, on 7th April, would it expire at 10am on 14th, or would it remain valid until the end of that day?

  1. Aside from our travel to Hiroshima and Kyoto, would it be worth paying the extra £90 each for the 14 day pass to use to travel around Tokyo throughout our 6 days there? I've heard that local trains can be just as handy as using the subway? Or would it be cheaper and convenient to just purchase the 7 day pass, and just get subway tickets or passes for our time in Tokyo?

Hi there,

The JR Pass is counted in full days and the 1st day is counted as a full day, no matter what time you start using it. The JR Pass will then expires on the 7th day at 23:59, one second before midnight.

In general I would not get a JR Pass for just local travel in Tokyo. However since you visit Kyoto and Hiroshima, both a 7 and 14 day JR Pass would allow you to make savings. The JR Pass is indeed valid on the local JR network in Tokyo, which is very convenient and covers most of the city.

The nice thing about having a JR Pass is Tokyo, is that it is easy to make day trips as well. Think about a visit to Kamakura, Nikko or Yokohama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
