Dear Sir,

I hope you can help me. Am confused with the different kind of trains and most of them leave from big city like Tokyo. I came across train names like OITO, SUPER AZUSA, JR CHUO to Matsumoto and all the trains depart from Shinjuku. I will be in Toyama for 3 days before going on to MATSUMOTO and would like your advice as to which train to take from TOYAMA to MATSUMOTO. Thank you.

Warm regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

You can use all trains on the JR Chuo line, such as the Azusa trains.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel san. I checked out the Azusa train but not able to find departure from Toyama. Is a reservation necessary on this train. Can I book the train ticket when I am in Toyama a day before I travel. Also please let me know the fare for budget purposes. We are budget travellers, so is there a cheaper alternative (bus for example) for travel between Toyama and Matsumoto.

Thank you again Daniel san for your prompt reply.

Warm regards

Hi Suan,

Will you be using a rail pass? knowing this will help me find the best option.

Thank you Daniel San. No, I am not using a rail pass as my travel dates are not consecutive. My 3 weeks itinerary will be roughly as follows;
Day 1 - arrive Narita , then overnight bus to Kanazawa
3 days in Kanazawa Day 4. Kanazawa to Toyama- 3 days
Day 7. Toyama to Matsumoto - 3 days
Day 10 Matsumoto to Nagano- 3 days
Day 13. Nagano to Osaka - 4 days
Day 17 Osaka to Tokyo - 3 days
Day 20. Tokyo - home

Thank you again Daniel San and really grateful if you can help me get the best value for my train travel. Do not mind taking the slower and cheaper train as Shinkansen is expensive and we have time to enjoy the beauty of Japan ‘s countryside.

Warm regards

Chris
