Hello, we have been to Japan before but now travelling with a friend whom has not been. We are flying in and out of Osaka and have 6 nights/7 days there, we are already booked for Sumo but thinking if it worthwhile to get a JR pass this trip or not? (last trip was 10 days and we covered so much ground and got our monies worth!).

So far we are looking at 2 nights in Osaka - Tokyo area, maybe to Nagano/Naeba (snow play time for 2 nights & maybe see the snow monkeys too?).
Then 2 nights in Tokyo (want to see Shinjuku this trip and maybe Mt Fuji - last time at Lake Ashi was too cloudy).

The main questions we have:
Q1. Is it worth while getting the pass for such a short trip
Q2. Is it worth going to stay at the snow area or shall we do a day trip only (if day trip...with whom and where to?)
Q3. Is it worth going elsewhere from Tokyo/Osaka or ?

We are open to suggestions and advice - Thanks

Hi there,

1.) A 7 day JR Pass can certainly be worth considering if you use it for a trip from Osaka to Tokyo and also visit Nagano. It does of course depend on what your final travel plan will look like.

2.) Yes, there will be snow. Nagano and Jigokudani are great options an other alternative is Gala-Yuzawa near Niigata. It has its own Shinkansen station and is very accessible from Tokyo (open until the start of May).

3.)An other area you could visit are the Japanese Alps, here too you will find good snow and great places to visit like Takayama, Kanazawa and Matsumoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel-san, appreciate your reply and knowledge!

Looks like the itinerary is a little more set now, info below...

1n Osaka (sumo show the following morning)
travel to Tokyo for 5 nights (snow day trip/snow monkeys, Mt Fuji or other as mentioned above?)
travel back to Osaka for 1 night and then fly home the following day

Rail pass still a good idea, price wise?
Thanks

Hello again!

Definitely! The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka. You can make great savings by also visiting the snow money park and Fuji.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
