Hi
I am currently research and reading up on Kyushu for my family trip end Nov 2016 for 13 days.

In a nutshell, my itinerary is as such: (I am still finetuning the details and the number of days at each of the places)

26 Nov - arrive Fukuoka morning (Hakata: Stay 1 night)

27 Nov - head to Yufuin for whole day sightsee via train and then on to Beppu (Beppu: Stay 4 nights)
- While in beppu, to visit suspension bridge - While in beppu, to visit african safari - While in beppu, to visit the Hell Springs

1 Dec - Proceed to Mount Aso and continue on to Kumamoto (Kumamoto: Stay 3 nights)
- while in kumamoto, visit Takahochi Gorge - while in kumamoto, visit Nagasaki (via 30 mins Ferry) - While in kumamoto, visit kumamoto castle and sights

4 Dec - Proceed to Hakata (Hakata: Stay 4 nights)
- while in hakata, visit Hakata sightsee sites and make daytrips - while in hakata, make trip to Huis Ten Bosch and stay 1 night

9 Dec - Fly home from Fukuoka.

While looking at this itinerary ... do you think JR pass is the best pass to go for? and are you able to recommend "must see" or "must do"?

While i would like to cover as much as i can within this number of days, i am constrained by a certain budget and i do not want it to be too rush ...

Thank you so much for your time.

Cheers

Hello there,

Since you'll be traveling in Kyushu only, it would make sense to look at a Kyushu rail pass. They offer a 5 day pass and this may be the best option if you can plan in such a way. This would mean adjusting your itinerary a little bit here and there.

I also recommend visiting Kagoshima, the city lies all the way down south in Kyushu and has an epic view on Sakura-Jima, the volcano in its bay.

A JR Pass could also be useful but I would really recommend visiting Hiroshima and Himeji as will if you where to use one, as they are not too far from Kyushu.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Yes, I too would recommend visiting Kagoshima (to go to the Sakurajima volcano ....we took a heavenly orange juice there 20 years ago.:) :).
Also plan to take the train to Ibusuki....it is gorgeous.
