We arrive t Kansai airport late in the evening of 27th March after the last train leaves

Question 1 Do we book a hotel or sleep at the airport on a bench?

We have the next five nights booked in Kyoto and then go to Tokyo for four nights booked in Tokyo

Question 2 When would be the best time to activate a 7 day JR pass?

We leave Tokyo on the morning of 6th April from a remote airport Tokyo Ibaraki airport where we have get a prepaid shuttle to . So not using card on 6 April.

Question 3 We could change itenary with one less night in Kyoto and one more in Tokyo. What do you think?

Many thanks for reading

Hi,
Oh God, please don't sleep on an airport bench. You are supposed to be enjoying a vacation. There are a number of cheaper hotels close to the airport, like First Hotel, Kanku Hotel Sunplus Yutaka, Izumisano etc. Some may have a free shuttle bus to the hotel, otherwise taxi fare is not too far or high. Check the typical booking engines like Hotels.com
Unfortunately if you are not taking the bullet train back to Osaka from Tokyo, a 7 day JR Pass would not pay off. But since you mention an extra day, one possible idea is to do a day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima. If you start early in the morning, you can see the Peace Par/Museum and perhaps the castle or Shukkeien Garden, and about 3/4 a day to see Miyajima - it is one of Japan's top rated places. That would make the JR Pass cost effective as well as broaden your trip.

For Kyoto, be sure to take a day to see Nara as well - it is a must-see place as well. The multi-year renovation of Himeji Castle (Japan's finest) will be finished by then so it is also well worth your time.

Your comments about April 6th are unclear. At any rate, if you go to Hiroshima and make the 7 day pass worth it, it'd be best to bundle all your travel on bullet trains (which are the most expensive) within the 7 days.

Hi there,

1.) Although the airport remains open all night, I would advise finding a hotel nearby. Losing time to fatigue is not how you would want to spend a holiday. Local hotels start at 4,000yen a night.

2.) If you have a JR Pass, then you will at least want to cover the Shinkansen travel between Tokyo - Kyoto with it, as this is the most expensive part. Then try to fit in as much as possible to get the best use out of it. Personally I'd recommend a visit to Nikko. It's one of the best day trips you can make and you get the best out of your JR Pass as well.

3.) This really depends on what you wish to see and do in either Kyoto or Tokyo. I'd suggest making a list of things you wish to do and then see how to best match a schedule to it.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
