A family of four consisting of 2 x adults 2x children ( 5 and 7 yo) will visit japan again in december 2024.
Last time i visited japan the jrpass was considerable worth it, pre price rise. My question is if its still worth it for a 13 day visit.

Were planning on using Osaka as base and make travels to kyoto, kobe, mt.fuji and tokyo. Our flight in and out is from Osaka.

Is a 7-day pass worth it?

Hi there,

It will depend on your routes and timing. I don't have your full details itinerary but in general, a return ticket Tokyo - Osaka (or visa versa) is no longer enough for a JR Pass to help you save money. Still if you plan on using the Shinkansen a few times, then it can add up quickly. For example will Mt. Fuji be a day trip from Osaka? Or a stop along the way?

Also, adding a visit to Hiroshima would give you good value with the pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel

It really depends on how much use you are going to get out of the Shinkansen. If you keep going back and forth (which while others say it's not fun, in reality it can be very fun!) then you will quickly get your money's worth. However, if you only take it a few times then you may end up being better served by just getting normal tickets.

Hi thanks for great answers!
Our plan is to make two daily visits to tokyo from osaka.
So planned itenary-
Dec 27: Osaka- Tokyo and same day tokyo-osaka
Dec 28: Osaka-Tokyo and same day tokyo- osaka
Dec 29: Osaka-Kobe and return same day
Dec 30: Osaka -Kyoto and return same day
Dec 31: Osaka-Kyoto and return same day

We are 100% squeezing in mt. Fuji but hiroshima could definitely be an option for a daily excursion.

I know kyoto and kobe can be easily accessed by local trains so shinkansen is not a must.

So from above i would guess a 7day pass would be worth it?

Hi there,

Yes, with your itinerary you’d be making significant savings purchasing a 7-day JR Pass, without even including Hiroshima or Fuji.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
