Hi, I'm going to travel to Japan for the first time from February 2 to March 1, so more than 21 days.

In detail, this is my travel route:

From 2 to 10: Arrive at Narita Airport, then Tokyo, and go around the city.

From 10 to 17: Kyoto, and from here I'm gonna take a day (the 16th) to go to Ine.

From 17 to 24: Osaka, and from here, again, I'm taking a day (the 23rd) to go to Ogijima Island, Kagawa.

From 24 to 1: Kamakura, and on March 1 back to Narita Airport

I was thinking if I really need the JR pass. Can someone help? Also if I have to take only the Suica does the card work on the whole of Japan? or does it at least include my destinations?

Thanks,
Cheers

Hi there,

Just to clarify the difference: The JR Pass is one ticket, or pass if you will, for unlimited travel. While SUICA is an electronic payment method, called an IC card, and does not provide any discount on itself.

I put your itinerary in rough form in the JR Fare calculator and you'd break about even with the cost of a 21-day Japan Rail Pass. However, add any local travel you can do with the pass and I think it is worth considering.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel
