we will be travelling to japan shortly, for 12 days. my wife holds a thai passport and according to a very recent bi-lateral agreement between both countries will not require a visa to enter japan. however, the jr website (under 'eligibility') sort of indicates that thai citizens do require something like a 'visitor' visa in order to use a jr pass..... can you clarify this for us? thank you!!!
jr pass for thai citizens?
Hi there!
The JR Pass does require anyone that wishes to make use of it to enter Japan under a tourist visa. Many countries have an agreement with Japan that specifies that these nationalities are exempt from having to apply for a visa before entering Japan (also knows as visa waiver program), instead your visa is stamped in your passport the moment that you pass trough immigration.
As a Thai passport holder you will now receive a 15 day tourist Visa upon entering Japan, which will allow you to make use of the JR Pass.
I hope this helps!
Daniel
