I will be traveling to Japan in December. Have read a lot about means of transport but still a bit confused...
Is the train the cheapest way to get from Narita Airport to Osaka City and then return back to Tokyo? If it is, will it be more convenient for me to get the Japan Rail Pass or just buy tickets for this round trip? There are so many lines that I can not figure it out which one is the one I should get...

Yes - the JR Pass is by far the best option for this. It covers the full route and you can make nice savings over normal ticket prices, additionally the JR Pass will work as a single ticket for the entire trip making it very convenient to travel around. Additionally the JR Pass is good for the local JR Network in Osaka in Tokyo, possibly adding even more to your savings.

Where can I check services timetable? Do you know if it is eastbound or westbound the one I should take? I think I´ll be arriving at Narita Airport about 17hours....
